" The Hidden Retreat "
Project Location: Damansara Perdana, Selangor.
Area: 381 m² / 4,101ft²
Status: Design Development
The Rafflesia Damansara project represents a sophisticated architectural intervention that transforms a previously underutilized structural skeleton into a vibrant, multi-level subterranean sanctuary. Originally consisting of an exposed grid of columns and beams clinging to a steep hillside beneath a three-story semi-detached house, the proposal seeks to enclose and activate this "found space". By working within the existing footprint and structural logic, the design converts a challenging topographical condition into a series of stepped, functional volumes that cascade down the hilly forest terrain.

The architectural narrative is defined by the creation of four distinct basement levels, each meticulously programmed to enhance the leisure and entertainment capacity of the primary residence. At the upper tiers, the extension introduces essential support and private zones, including a maid’s room, specialized storage, and a gym. As one descends deeper into the extension, the floor plates expand into more social environments, featuring a spacious living hall, a dining area, and dedicated entertainment halls designed for large-scale domestic gatherings.
A key driver of the design is the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor environments, achieved through extensive glazing and strategic landscape interventions. The rear elevation is characterized by expansive, floor-to-ceiling glass panels that offer unobstructed views of the surrounding forest, effectively blurring the boundary between the built form and the natural landscape. This connection is reinforced by a series of landscaped garden pockets with integrated seating that flank the external staircase, providing moments of repose and greenery at every level of the descent

Vertical circulation is treated as both a functional necessity and an experiential journey. Residents can navigate the multi-level extension via a sleek internal elevator for convenience or utilize the "Sheltered Staircase" that hugs the side of the structure. The external staircase is particularly expressive, featuring integrated lighting within the treads that, during the night, creates a glowing pathway leading down the hillside. This dual circulation strategy ensures that all levels remain accessible while celebrating the dramatic change in elevation.
